Turnovers doom Jaguars at Mountain Brook

MOUNTAIN BROOK – A tough start to the season for Spain Park High School’s football team continued on Friday, Sept. 14, with a 24-14 loss to Mountain Brook.
The visiting Jaguars (1-3 overall, 0-2 in Class 7A, Region 3, scored first four minutes into the game on a pass from Mason Pronk to Jalen Henderson, who took it 77 yards for a touchdown.
Shortly into the second quarter, Henderson ran for a 67-yard touchdown to put Spain Park up 14-0 after Trevor Bernier’s point after.
But then the Spartans (4-0, 2-0) began clawing back, first with a 29-yard field goal by Thomas Roberts and then on a scoop-and-score by Mountain Brook defender Alexander Washington.
With 3:41 remaining in the second quarter, John Wilbanks found the end zone from eight yards out to give MBHS a lead it would not surrender.
Anthony Gates added an insurance score in the fourth quarter, as Spain Park was unable to score in the second half.
SPHS matched the hosts in total yardage (317 to 316), but three turnovers were the difference.
Pronk completed seven passes in 15 attempts for 103 yards.
Spain Park’s Harrison Barker completed three passes in seven attempts for 58 yards.
Henderson rushed 13 times for 103 yards and caught three passes for 93 yards.
Dre Robinson Jr. paced the defense with 8.5 tackles, including two tackles for loss and one sack.
Josh Wallace had 7.5 tackles, one sack and 2.5 tackles for loss.
The Jaguars are on a three-game slide with some of the state’s best competition coming up: against Hewitt-Trussville on Sept. 21, at Thompson on Oct. 5 and against Hoover on Oct. 12.
