ALABASTER – Three new retail and restaurant buildings soon may be coming to Alabama 119 near the Hardee’s restaurant, as the Alabaster Planning and Zoning Commission recently voted to subdivide land for the projects.

The Commission voted during an Aug. 28 meeting to approve subdividing a little more than 4 acres from one lot to three smaller lots to allow the new developments to proceed. The city voted to zone the land as B-3 commercial in 2016.

The Alabaster Montevallo LLC company is working to develop the east side of Alabama 119 south of its intersection with Thompson Road. The company previously worked to bring a Hardee’s restaurant to the area, and construction is nearing completion on a new gas station slightly north of the restaurant.

According to information from the Planning and Zoning Commission, the developer is looking to bring another restaurant directly south of Hardee’s, and is looking to bring another restaurant and retail center across 119 from the Montevallo Place apartment complex.

The developer has not yet announced which restaurants and retail establishments would come to the new developments.

Once constructed, the new developments will add a right-turn-only lane off Alabama 119 north into the restaurant next to Hardee’s, and will add in-and-out access off 119 north for the two buildings across from Montevallo Place.

Any new buildings constructed would be required to meet the design and appearance standards the city enacted when it passed an overlay district in the area last year.

The Planning and Zoning Commission meeting came one night after the City Council voted to enact a one-year moratorium on new housing construction along the 119 corridor south of its intersection with Fulton Springs Road. The proposed retail developments would not be affected by the moratorium.
