TUSCALOOSA – For the second consecutive week, the Vincent Yellow Jackets’ football team faded in the second half after showing promise throughout the first half of the game when they traveled to Tuscaloosa on Friday, Aug. 31, to take on Holy Spirit, falling 56-22.
Like last week, the Yellow Jackets were in the game most of the night, especially in the first half, but a strong third quarter by Holy Spirit was the difference.
During Vincent’s first game of the season, the team trailed by two scores entering the third quarter and that was no different tonight.
Last week, the Jackets scored on their opening drive of the quarter to make it a one possession game before White Plains went on to score 16 unanswered points over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
Against Holy Spirit, it was a similar script as the Saints took a 21-8 lead into the half thanks to a late score in the second quarter. This time around, however, Vincent couldn’t start the third quarter with a touchdown.
Instead, Holy Spirit opened up the game and outscored the Yellow Jackets 22-6 over the next quarter and a half to take a 43-14 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Holy Spirit added two more scores in the final quarter, while Vincent posted one more touchdown leading to the final score of 56-22.
Early in the game it was far from the blowout the final score showed.
Vincent actually took the first lead of the night with a touchdown less than five minutes into the game that put the Jackets on top 8-0 in the early going.
Holy Spirit answered back shortly after to tie the game 8-8 at the end of the first quarter, and continued its turnaround into the second quarter scoring 13 more unanswered points to take a 21-8 lead at the half.
With 6:17 left in the third quarter, that score remained the same, before Holy Spirit completely shifted the game around and steamrolled the final 18 minutes of the game, scoring 35 points in that short amount of time.
It marked Holy Spirit’s second win of the season, as the Saints moved to 2-0 after dominating Autaugaville 55-0 in Week 1, giving them 111 points through two games.
Vincent will now prepare for one of its toughest games of the season against LaFayette at home on Friday, Sept. 7, before a much-needed bye week to regain some confidence moving into an important stretch that will determine a playoff spot.
