HOOVER – The driver of an 18-wheeler was apparently run over by the vehicle and killed on Friday, Aug. 17, in the parking lot of the Home Depot store off U.S. 280.
Hoover police and fire departments responded to the store, at 4995 U.S. 280, at 5:10 a.m. after a report of a person struck by a vehicle, according to a release from Hoover Police Department.
Medics pronounced the victim dead on the scene, and HPD traffic investigators responded and determined the victim was the driver of the truck, a 2015 Freightliner, according to the release.
“The preliminary investigation shows the victim may have been performing a task outside of the truck when it began to roll forward toward the store,” the release read. “Evidence suggests he tried to get back in the cab to stop it but either tripped or fell off the running board and got caught underneath the truck. It rolled over the victim and came to rest after striking a shopping cart corral in the parking lot.”
The Shelby County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Anthony Fidel Martin, 56, of Fayetteville, North Carolina.
No foul play is suspected, according to HPD, and the case remains under investigation by the department’s Traffic Unit.
