HELENA–The Helena Police Department is asking residents to become vigilant when it comes to locking vehicles and keeping valuables away and out of sight after a rash of vehicle burglaries has occurred in the city.
The HPD said the recent crimes have occurred as a result of opportunity by criminals entering unlocked vehicles, in a Aug. 15 release.
“We are experiencing a rash of vehicle burglaries in our city,” the release read. “Most of these crimes involve thieves who are entering unlocked vehicles and taking items that are left in plain sight or easily accessible. Our officers are increasing their neighborhood patrols in an effort to deter these criminals from operating in our community, but we need your help.”
The Helena Police Department urged residents to take a few simple actions to avoid becoming a victim of a vehicle burglary. They’re as follows:
–Lock car doors and remove valuable items from vehicles when they are left unattended.
–Do not leave unattended firearms in your vehicle or at least place the unattended firearm in the trunk, a locked compartment, or out of plain sight.
–Keep a watchful eye.
HPD encourages anyone to report any unusual or suspicious activity to the department at any time by calling 663-6499.
