NORTH SHELBY – More than 50 years ago, one musical changed theatre forever.
West Side Story is the tragic love story of a man and woman caught between two rival gangs, the Sharks and the Jets. This week the students of Briarwood Christian School will present West Side Story.
Briarwood Theatre Director Lee Eady said she’s excited about the production for many reasons.
“It’s a rather large and difficult production, but the kids like to be challenged,” she said. “I also like that there is a great lesson the kids and audience can learn. The underlying theme is about prejudice, and it really gets you to ask yourself some thought provoking questions. Of course it’s also a fabulous love story!”
Eady said 46 students are involved in the production on stage, with 20 more working behind the scenes. A live, full orchestra will provide the score.
Senior Cole Jackson and sophomore Halle Beasley will play the main roles Tony and Maria.
Choreography is by Claudia Butler and April Kirby. Dr. Joel Mixon is the pianist.
Briarwood Christian’s production of West Side Story will take place three nights: Thursday-Saturday, March 15-17, at the high school’s Barbara B. Barker Auditorium.
All shows are at 7 p.m. Ticket prices are $11 for adults and $5 for students.
