Charles Vernell Goggins
Charles Vernell Goggins, 85, passed away at his home on Saturday, Dec. 30.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Mae Goggins; his parents Edgar and Mamie Seals; and siblings, Bobbie Gene Bailey, Hershal Goggins, Raymond Seals, Ester Airias, Lawrence Seals, Rebbecca Barrin, Douglas Seals, William Earl Seals, Gloria Langston and Joyce Smith; and his son Calob Lee Goggins.
He is survived by three sisters, Quejette McCormick of Midland, Georgia, Doris Kendrick of McHenry, Illinios, and Linda Scurlock of Helena; his children, Charles Wayne Goggins (Freddie), Jerry Lee Goggins (Connie), Timothy Lynn Goggins (Tabitha), Kathy Goggins, Darlene Mobley (Kenneth) and Brittney Goggins; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Vernell was born at home on May 15, 1932 in Maylene to Joseph Eugene Goggins and Mamie Galloway Goggins. He was adopted at age 7 by his stepfather, Edgar Seals and the family eventually grew to 14 children.
Vernell worked at an early age to help support the family and later was employed by Drummond Coal Company for 33 years, until his retirement in March of 1994. He became a certified electrician in the coalmines and was known by his nickname ”Ugg”.
On May 24, 1952 Vernell married the love of his life, Dorothy Glass Goggins. They were married for 53 years and enjoyed square dancing as a couple. Vernell was an avid Calera Eagles fan for his sons and grandchildren.
Vernell was baptized as one of the Jehovah’s Witnesses in 1994. He and Dot were devoted to their worship of Jehovah God and their ministry. They were members of the Calera English Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses.
Vernell’s white hair, blue eyes and smile will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
The service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 8th Avenue, Calera, on Saturday, Jan. 6 with visitation from 12-2 p.m. and a memorial service at 2 p.m.
