COLUMBIANA – The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office is planning to hold a memorial service for a homicide victim, known as “Baby Doe,” in the pauper’s section of the Columbiana City Cemetery at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15.

According to a press release from the SCSO, the service is to acknowledge the short life of a two-day-old white, female baby who was found dead at the Shelby County Landfill in 1982, as well as to provide a permanent memorial marker, which will be provided by Shelby Granite of Calera.

The memorial service is scheduled to take place close to the 35^th anniversary of Baby Doe’s birth and death.

While investigators at the time conducted an extensive investigation and her death was ruled a homicide, the baby’s identity and family members were never determined and the case went cold. Baby Doe was buried at the Columbiana City Cemetery in an unmarked grave.

In 2013, the SCSO reopened the Baby Doe case, and is actively investigating it. According to the press release, investigators believe that someone in the local area may have knowledge of Baby Doe’s identity and the events surrounding her death.
