Tom Douglas Abel, USN – retired, age 84, of Montevallo, passed away Monday, Sept. 18.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Jean Richards Abel; his parents, Amos and Katie Beavers Abel; several brothers and sisters; and his beloved dog, Pepper.

He is survived by his son, Scott (Sandra); his greatest joy – his grandson, Brandyn Scott Abel; sisters, Juanita and Faye; brother, Roger; special niece, Wanda Butts (Troy); special nephews, Alan K Hendrickson and Ronald Hendrickson; several great nieces and nephews; and his canine playmate, Rosie.

He was an avid fisherman and loved spending time fishing and crabbing with his grandson. He spent most of his life in the state of Virginia, relocating to Alabama in 2014.

His funeral service will be held Thursday, Sept. 21 at Rockco Funeral Home (Montevallo), at 11 a.m. with visitation beginning at 10 a.m.
