HOOVER – Spain Park High School’s annual free football camp will offer children a chance to learn the basics of the sport.
The camp will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon June 20-22 at the SPHS athletic complex.
The registration deadline is June 19.
The camp is for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade.
SPHS football coach Shawn Raney said the camp is intended to teach the fundamentals of football, including offensive and defensive schemes implemented at the varsity level and drills that will allow campers to improve their speed and agility.
“We teach every kid every position,” Raney said. “We don’t dictate if they’re a quarterback or a lineman at that age.”
Campers will learn positions and other aspects of the game for the first two hours of the camp each day, and the last 30 minutes of each day is reserved for competitive games.
“We basically just run around and throw it and catch it and go crazy,” Raney said.
Varsity assistant coaches and players help with the camp, which usually is attended by 100-120 children.
Campers should bring a pair of football cleats, T-shirt and shorts, and money for Powerade.
