Robert (Trey) Basol Hughes, III, age 49, of Alabaster, died peacefully in his sleep of natural causes on Good Friday, April 14. He was born on Aug.14, 1967.
He is survived by his three children, Mary Alice Hughes, Robert Basol Hughes IV (Bay) and Ashley Hughes, all of Alabaster; his parents, Robert Basol Hughes, Jr. (Bobby) and Elaine Wood Hughes of Montevallo; his brother, Kevin Hughes of Montevallo; sister, Beth Hughes Wilder; and brother-in-law, Chris Wilder of Birmingham; three nephews, Will Wilder, Patrick Wilder, and Jackson Hughes; and his niece, Hannah Wilder. The family, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, relatives and friends, mourn his untimely death.
Trey is a 1985 graduate of Montevallo High School, where he excelled in athletics, and a 1991 graduate of the University of Montevallo, where he played baseball, majored in English, and was a member of Delta Chi fraternity. He was editor of the Clanton Advertiser in the 1990s where he brought the small community newspaper from a weekly to a daily publication. He then went to work in corporate communications for the International Code Council in Birmingham, eventually rising to director of communications for that organization.
An avid sportsman, Trey loved golf, salt water fishing, and college football, especially his beloved Auburn Tigers. He was a connoisseur of country music and enjoyed attending concerts and listening to Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Johnny Cash, and Kris Kristofferson with his friends.
He was a kind and gentle soul, a devoted father, son and brother, and a friend to many.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, April 18 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Montevallo.
The family asks that donations be made to the American Heart Association in Trey’s memory.
