Warrior Volleyball Clinics set for February, March

ALABASTER- The 2017 Warrior Volleyball Spring Clinic Series is set to take place during the months of February and March in the Thompson High School gym. THS volleyball coach Judy Green said the clinics are open to both boys and girls from the fourth to sixth grades from Alabaster and surrounding areas.
“The clinics are designed to introduce the wonderful game of volleyball to the youngest generation,” Green said. “These are strictly just teaching clinics.”
According to Green, she and members of the THS varsity, junior varsity and freshman volleyball teams will teach kids about the basics of volleyball in a fun environment.
“They’re going to have fun playing a game that they know very little about, and they get to experiment with their athleticism. They get to work with other children and develop relationships, all while learning about the fundamental skills of the game,” Green said.
Green said these clinics are a good opportunity for kids to get acquainted with a unique sport, and will make volleyball more accessible to kids in Shelby County.
“A lot of times, our kids don’t get introduced to real volleyball until around the sixth grade. This is a sport that you can play for mostly all of your life. You can even be 80 years old and play in the USA Volleyball Nationals,” Green said.
“There are some opportunities for this age group around the Birmingham and Hoover areas, but other than our clinic around this community, there’s really not anything for them,” Green said.
Green said she hopes the clinics will garner more interest in the THS volleyball program.
“It’s a grassroots process for us to grow our program at Thompson. In order for us to continue to move forward and to develop volleyball within the community, we have to reach the youngest ages,” Judy said.
The clinics are scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. on the following days:
–Sunday, Feb. 19
–Sunday, Feb. 26
–Sunday, March 5
–Sunday, March 12
–Sunday, March 19
A $30 fee is charged for each clinic. Registration for all clinics costs $130. Green said all checks should be made to the THS volleyball program.
