Area school systems closed Jan. 6 for possible winter weather

Shelby County Schools, Alabaster City Schools, Pelham City Schools, Hoover City Schools, Indian Springs School, Hilltop Montessori School and the University of Montevallo will be closed on Friday, Jan. 6, due to the threat of winter weather expected to affect the area, according to a release from the districts the afternoon of Jan. 5.
All extracurricular events scheduled for Friday, Jan. 6 and the weekend have also been cancelled and will be rescheduled.
“After consulting with the Shelby County EMA regarding the possibility of winter weather, Alabaster City Schools will be closed all day on Friday, Jan. 6. Extracurricular activities are also canceled,” read a statement from ACS.
A winter storm watch is in effect for Shelby County from 6 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 6, until 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 7, according to the National Weather Service.
Officials expect snow over the northern part of Alabama, a mixture of snow and ice in North-Central Alabama, ice in South-Central Alabama and precipitation in the southern part of the state.
“We will continue to monitor weather conditions that may affect Shelby County Schools for Monday, Jan. 9,” read a release from SCS.
