BIRMINGHAM – Round one belongs to Briarwood. After trailing 14-0 for most of the game, Briarwood Christian rallied in the second half to win its first-ever meeting against the Wenonah Dragons, 15-14, at Bell-Culpepper Stadium.
With the win, Briarwood (2-1) improves to 2-0 in Class 5A, Region 5.
An early 5-yard touchdown pass from Carlos Rogers to JaDarius Redwine put the Dragons on the board, followed by a pick-six by Redwine to make it 14-0 in the first quarter.
Briarwood got on the board early in the third quarter when quarterback William Gray found Kolby Kwarcinski for a 28-yard touchdown pass with 9:12 to play in the quarter.
Midway through the fourth quarter, a couple of big catches help set up the Lions’ go-ahead score. Gray caught a pass at receiver and then hit Kwarcinski at the Dragons’ 2 a few plays later. Gray capped the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run and found Barrett Tindall on the 2-point catch to take the lead, 15-14 with 5:48 to play
Jonathan Hill intercepted a Rogers’ pass at the 2 with 1:44 to play to lock in the game.
Briarwood will return home Sept. 16 to host Fairfield in a Region 5 game.
