The Shelby County Wildcats kicked off their season with a jamboree matchup at Childersburg High School on Friday night.
In the end the Wildcats ground game was too much for Childersburg to handle. The Tigers had a 12-8 halftime lead, but couldn’t hang on as Shelby County scored 12 unanswered in the second half.
Junior running back’s Keyvontae Mayfield and Aramee Calloway combined for 191 yards and 2 touchdowns on 24 carries and led the team to a 20-12 victory. Calloway also added a 2-point conversion.
This was big for a team that came into the year with a big question mark at the running back position after losing Shelby County Player of the Year Jamarius Mayfield, who rushed for 1,714 yards on 15 carries last year.
Shelby County will start the regular season next Friday night, Aug. 26, at Holt High School.
