NORTH SHELBY—Ever wonder who plans the North Shelby Library teen events? The library’s Teen Leadership Council does. Each month, the group gets together to brainstorm and plan an activity.
So far the group has planned everything from an Indiana Jones movie night and scavenger hunt, to library Nerf wars, to a hotdog eating contest.
“We come up with the ideas, and (the library) provides the tools,” Teen Council member Alexandra Kloss said.
Each event must be appropriate for sixth through 12th grade students.
In addition to planning the events, the Teen Council is also responsible for publicizing them. The teens work together during monthly meetings to create posters for their events.
The group is currently busy planning events for the summer. During an April 28 meeting, six members of the Teen Council were busy planning their next event—a potato stamp carving project in which participants create unique stamp designs in a potato.
Other projects on the Teen Council’s agenda include a Pop Tart tasting contest, a sips and strokes-style painting and slushie night and a fencing class.
Planning events is just one of the Teen Leadership Council’s responsibilities. Members also attend and assist with library programs, create library displays and prepare library crafts. Each member is also responsible for a section of bookshelves.
Members may earn volunteer hours for their participation in the Teen Council.
The North Shelby Library Teen Leadership Council includes Alexandra Kloss, Veronica Kloss, Jovanna Kloss, Tyler Ball, Morgan Wadsworth and Katie Peck.
