MONTEVALLO–The Helena boys soccer team traveled to Montevallo on Tuesday, April 12 seeking their third area win while also keeping a perfect record in area play.
The Huskies had no problem dismantling the Bulldogs as three separate Helena players scored multiple goals as Montevallo had no answer for one of the top teams in 4A-5A competition.
Helena got on the scoreboard early and often and one of the player’s who scored multiple goals was senior midfielder Jeremy Hughes who finished with two first half goals and boosted his overall goal total for the year to 19.
The Huskies took a 5-0 lead into halftime and Helena head coach Zach Morgan credited a lot of the success in the game to getting off to a fast start.
“At the beginning of the game we played well and played with a lot of space and used that space quickly and that’s something that we learned from the Jemison game,” said Morgan. “If teams are going to throw a lot of people in the back as we call parking the bus, you have to spread them out. So we played quick to the outside and that’s what we were doing a lot quicker today and there was a lot of great ball movement.”
Helena played multiple players in the game and in addition to Hughes two goals, the Huskies got two goals from Cael Cranor, two goals from Wynton Perry and a goal a piece from Landon Gaskins, Jason Nichols and Erik Canales.
Helena improved their record to 3-0 in area play and 10-5-2 overall. The Huskies will play each area opponent one more time before postseason play begins.
Helena will travel to Jemison on April 18, Calera on April 19 and finish area play at home against Montevallo on April 22.
