Niven also recognized Dana Polk, Chelsea Public Library director and the first city employee Niven hired after incorporation; Jeff Jones, community center manager; Gerri Roberts, who helps with event hospitality; Jimmy Springfield, the city’s maintenance supervisor; Gary Niven with Argo Building for his work on the community center project; and the late Shelba Nivens for writing the information in the city’s historical marker at Chelsea City Hall.

“We’re so proud to have people that have formed the foundation for us,” Niven said.

“We have a true family here in Chelsea. It doesn’t take newcomers long to realize it.”

Wayne Morris, who wrote “The Heart of Chelsea,” a song for the city, was also recognized. A recording of the song was played.

Niven introduced his wife of 50 years, June, and noted her support throughout his time as mayor.

“People say, ‘When I see the mayor, I see his wife,'” he said. “That’s the way a marriage should be. It’s certainly been a pleasure to be the mayor for 20 years.”

Niven advised those running for mayor this year to “love Chelsea” and to “know how to manage money.”

“I still have a philosophy: You plan for the future, and you see that you have the money to pay for it before you commit,” Niven said. “We started out with zero. I’m leaving you with $2 million to work with. We’ve come a long way.”

The Chelsea Business Alliance provided the ribbon for the community center’s ribbon cutting ceremony. Greater Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Kirk Mancer and South Shelby Chamber of Commerce Executive Director April Stone were present.

“The future is before us for the city of Chelsea,” Niven said. “We’ve just created a foundation. We’re proud of Chelsea, and we hope that you are.”
