HOOVER—Uber, and similar transportation network companies, can now operate in Hoover. The Hoover City Council approved an ordinance amending the municipal code to allow transportation network companies into the city during a Jan. 19 meeting.
Hoover’s TNC ordinance is similar to those in Mountain Brook and Birmingham, City Attorney Charles Waldrep said. The ordinance covers TNC licensing, driver qualifications, background checks, required insurance coverage, vehicle safety inspections and more.
Waldrep noted the city’s ordinance includes “another layer of protection” for Hoover citizens by allowing vehicle safety inspections and driving history reviews by the Hoover Police Chief.
“While this will not be limiting in nature, it will give residents of Hoover an extra sense of safety,” Waldrep said. “We think this is a better ordinance…This gives some rights that Hoover will enjoy.”
Hoover Councilman retired admiral Jack Natter spoke highly of TNC services, specifically Uber. Natter said he has used Uber and was impressed and satisfied by the service the company offers.
“I’m extremely pleased to welcome them to the city,” Natter said.
The Hoover City Council also approved a resolution to sell surplus city-owned items at a public auction. A date for the auction has not been set as the city is still gathering items from the public safety center, Hoover Purchasing Director Ben Powell said.
The auction will include obsolete audio and video equipment, obsolete technology, light fixtures, building and construction materials, small office equipment and various furnishings, including desks, chairs, tables and file cabinets.
A date for the auction will be posted when it is determined.
