PELHAM— Many cities in the Birmingham area have recently approved resolutions allowing ride-sharing alternatives, such as the app Uber, within the city. The Pelham City Council discussed a similar resolution at its Jan. 21 meeting.
City finance director Tom Seale presented a “very rough draft” of a resolution taken from those already approved by Homewood, Hoover, Helena and Trussville. Seale said he incorporated important items addressed by the Pelham City Council related to the ride-sharing opportunities.
According to Seale, the draft included certain requirements, such as annual vehicle inspections, proof of insurance, background checks, rate cards and more.
Pelham City Council President Rick Hayes mentioned that City Council member Maurice Mercer and City Clerk Marsha Yates worked to gather information on the ride sharing opportunities.
Once the members of the City Council have the opportunity to look over the draft, Seale said changes can be made and concerns can be addressed in depth.
The Pelham City Council also,
- Discussed potential for hiring a city manager.
- Received updates on the Bearden Road Sidewalk project and the 261 Flood Mitigation Project.
- Approved an ABC license for Cajun Quick Mark, located at 3118 County Road 52 West.
- Approved the use of electronic voting counting devices and a voting system to assist individuals with disabilities.
- Authorized the ALDOT and MPO TAP applications for trails and greenways funding for the city.
- Heard the first reading of an ordinance that would rezone the property on Bearden Road, across from Pelham High School, from an R-T Residential Townhouse district to an R-G Residential Garden Home District.
