In her fifth year at Creek View Elementary, Chrissy Walsh has been voted “Teacher of The Year” by her peers.
Like all “Teachers of the Year,” she is quick to credit her fellow teachers, who do the voting.
Walsh also credits her success to a good working relationship with staff and administration.
Born and reared in Lakeland, Fla., Walsh came to Samford University in Birmingham to pursue a degree in nursing.
Post graduation she worked in a pre-school setting and decided that teaching was really her true calling.
Walsh then attended UAB and graduated with a master’s degree in special education.
Walsh is a kindergarten and first grade case manager for special needs students.
“The best part of my job is the students and I love to see them build their confidence and become excited about learning,” she said. “I love helping them through their struggles and helping them to develop their strengths. One day I hope to specialize in a certain area of special education or perhaps even teach at the university level.” Walsh is currently pursuing National Board Certification in her field.
Walsh has a special relationship with both parents and students.
By being involved with the family she can better address the needs and abilities of the student.
“The small difference in each child can make a significant difference in their life and in the world,” she said.
Walsh has been on several overseas trips, both for missions and leisure.
The Middle East, South America, Mexico, Great Britain and Jamaica have provided pleasure and gratification.
Walsh still has Alaska and Norway on her wish list.
Walsh loves to spend time with her family. She personally enjoys reading, doing crafts and studying things she is interested in.
Daughter Sierra, age 9 and son Ranier, age 6 along with husband David complete the family.
Church, school, community service, traveling and camping add to a full life for the Walsh family.
