In other business, the council approved funding agreements with the Hoover Board of Education.
First, the council passed a resolution reaffirming the city’s annual contribution of $2 million to the Hoover Board of Education, per fiscal year, to be disbursed quarterly, effective retroactively to Oct. 1.
“That’s a $2 million check, no discounts, no money coming back,” Council President Jack Wright said.
The city will also provide 100 percent of the funding for school resource officers in Hoover City Schools.
The funding is separate from the city’s annual contribution allocated to the BOE in the previous ordinance, and is effective retroactively to Oct. 1
“I’m proud of the council and you, Mr. President, for allowing this to be on the agenda,” Lyda said. “You have my full support.”
In addition, the council authorized an annual payment to the BOE of $1,500 “front door” fees charged with the issuance of each new residential construction building permit, retroactive to Oct. 1.
The only payment would come at the end of 2016 when the city knows how many building permits have been issued.
Hoover City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kathy Murphy thanked the council for approving additional funds for the board.
“I’m extremely grateful that you’re embracing and you’re finding other ways to support our students,” she said. “I look forward to continuing to have conversations with you, and I look forward to collaborating with you.”
