CALERA— By day, Kimeka Bloomfield’s kitchen is just a kitchen, but after the working day, it’s transformed into a workshop where Bloomfield crafts her chocolate-covered treats.
She experiments with marshmallows, rice crispy treats, Oreos, pretzels, chips, strawberries, fruit and more, dipping them into varieties of white, dark and milk chocolate.
The finishing touches always include some artsy flare, such as clever decorations to match any given theme.
The Calera resident has been crafting Meeks Sweet Treats for about eight to nine months now, and she said she never expected the business to take off like it did.
“Business has been great,” she said. “I’ve had clients contact me from all over the United States—Washington D.C. to California. More people just contact me. I’ve been really blessed. I’m really excited.”
She started out by creating homemade treats for her son’s birthday parties, saying she wanted to do something different for him. Then Bloomfield’s friends started asking her to do their parties.
“I really didn’t think I had a knack for it,” she laughed. “I was just doing something fun for my son.”
Bloomfield said she isn’t a cook or a baker, and she doesn’t have a background in art, but people always seem to enjoy her creations.
She’s done character lollipops and Oreos depicting Elsa, Olaf or Elmo. Bloomfield said she’s also experimented with pumpkin and peppermint chocolate.
One of her favorite parts about what she does is seeing the reaction on a child’s face when they see her treats.
“It’s priceless. I don’t even have words. Their eyes just light up; they love it,” she said. “I love making people happy, I love seeing people happy, I just love it.”
During the day, Bloomfield works to help people in a different way. She’s currently working toward her master’s degree in social work and will graduate in May.
The new degree won’t keep her from Meeks Sweet Treats though, she said. For the past 22 weeks, she’s been working at an internship. She said coming home and working in the kitchen is her way of decompressing and relaxing.
“It’s not a job. I don’t feel like I’m pressed. I love it,” Bloomfield said. “I go in the kitchen, get my supplies out, turn my music on and I’m going.”
