PELHAM— For the first time in Alabama, Calibre Press, a company specializing in training law enforcement professionals, will host its Street Survival Seminar for security and law enforcement officers at the Pelham Civic Complex Oct. 15-16.

The Philip Mahan Davis Foundation, headquartered in Pelham, is sponsoring the event as a way to continue the work of fallen officer Philip M. Davis. Davis, who was killed during a traffic stop on I-65 Dec. 4, 2009, was the first officer in the history of the Pelham Police Department to be killed in the line of duty.

“The officer who was killed, training was very important to him,” said Deputy Debbie Sumrall, community outreach with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office. “Every year, he took as many training classes as he could and he was also dedicated to sharing that training with his fellow officers.”

Sumrall said the foundation likes to sponsor events like this to provide training to first responders. In additional to hosting the event, the foundation is also providing scholarships for two officers from every agency in Shelby County.

The goal of the seminar, according to Calibre Press’s website, is to keep officers alive and to give them the tools to for a successful career in law enforcement. To accomplish this, the organization tackles the realities of police work for officers on the street.

“We are very excited,” Sumrall said. “We think it is going to be a wonderful opportunity to instill in officers the winning mindset (to) not just survive but to win in encounters.”

In the seminar, instructors will address “The Fatal Four,” examining the most common causes of law enforcement fatalities: Felonious assaults, traffic related incidents, physical conditioning and emotional health.

The “Ultimate Street Survival” portion of the class will develop skills and the knowledge that will keep the officers safe and successful, such as the 5-percent-er mindset, when/then thinking, maintaining tactical edge and understanding survival instincts.

Sumrall said there are already 70 people registered for the seminar from all over Alabama and even from Escambia County, Fla. The seminar will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 15 and Oct. 16 at the Pelham Civic Complex.

The course costs $50 and includes all course materials and refreshments. To register, email your name, rank and agency name to Debbie Sumrall at dsumrall@shelbyso.com. Deadline to register is Oct. 9.
