Two Chelsea men were arrested on burglary and theft charges related to an incident at the Chelsea youth baseball fields on Sept. 26.
Brian Tyler Hughes, 18, and Jonathan Michael Haney, 18, were charged with third-degree burglary and third-degree theft of property, according to a Shelby County Sheriff’s Office press release.
At about 8:15 p.m. on Sept. 26, SCSO deputies responded to a call from a concerned citizen who believed someone might have burglarized the concession stand at the ballpark.
Deputies determined someone had entered the concession stand by breaking a window and removed two cash registers.
Deputies discovered an unoccupied vehicle in the rear parking lot and located the owner, Hughes, at a residence within walking distance of the ballpark. Haney was also at the residence.
Hughes and Haney are currently being held in the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $6,000 each.
“This is a wonderful example of a citizen immediately calling us when he noticed a suspicious situation,” Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego wrote in the release. “Because of the citizen’s quick reaction, your deputies were able to respond quickly and collect valuable evidence which led to the arrests of those involved and the recovery of property to the Chelsea Youth Baseball program.”
