CALERA— Around this time of year, Calera community members deck out in pink to support the efforts of the Breast Cancer Research Foundation of Alabama. Calera Goes Pink will kick off at Calera High School’s football game Sept. 25 with events continuing into October.

“Calera is hugely generous,” said Jennifer Hand, executive director of the Calera Chamber of Commerce. “The people and the businesses of Calera are more supportive of their community, their neighbors as well as important causes…they are very in tune and very giving.”

The junior board of the Calera Chamber is selling yard signs to benefit the research foundation. The signs are $5 and bear the Calera Goes Pink and the Calera Chamber’s logo.

Hand said the signs have a white space at the bottom for the purchaser to dedicate the sign, and all the signs will form a big pink ribbon at halftime during the game. The signs will be displayed at city hall for the whole month of October.

At the game, community members will be able to purchase pink lemonade, pink balloons from Active Air and Calera Goes Pink T-shirts. Hand said they are hoping to have the majority of the fans in the pink at the game. During halftime, all the pink balloons will be released.

Timberline Golf Club will also host its annual Breast Cancer Golf Tournament Oct. 25 at 1 p.m. Registration is $100 per person and individual and foursomes will be awarded for top net and top gross points. Registration includes green fee, cart, practice balls, snacks, beverages, a light lunch and the awards dinner.

Hand said the Calera community has really rallied together and adopted breast cancer awareness as its own cause. The money also benefits breast cancer research in Alabama, which she said many people like.

“Everyone is all in, I get no pushbacks,” Hand said. “People are very fired up about it. It’s something they really get into, and they raise a lot of money.”

Calera Goes Pink T-shirts can also be purchased at Calera City Hall or at any Calera school. All T-shirt sizes are $12 each. For more information, email info@calerachamber.org.
