ADAMSVILLE–The Helena Huskies volleyball team got their first win of the season on Aug. 31 as the Huskies took down the Minor Tigers on the road.
The Huskies defeated the Tigers by a score of three games to one.
Helena won the first game 25-12, followed by losing 25-27 the second game and then rallying to win the last two games by scores of 25-17 and 25-20.
Helena head coach Amanda Lewis said she tries to schedule teams who will give her team a challenge and Minor was no different for the season opener.
“Minor is very athletic and we knew it would be a good competition with that,” said Lewis. “It was a good first game and it judged where we were and where we needed to be and what we need to work on.”
Artasia Debose led the Huskies with 12 kills and Mary Laatsch was runner-up with five kills. Emily Gustafson also led the team with three aces.
“Our goal for the match was to work on the tempo of our game,” said Lewis. “We struggled with some unforced errors but the first game what about seeing whose comfortable playing next to who. We are deep at a lot of positions and it’s a process to see who will get the job done consistently.”
Helena’s next opponent will be Isabella on the road on Thursday, Sept. 3.
Helena is tentatively scheduled to face Central Tuscaloosa at home for their first area game on Tuesday, Sept. 8, but problems with the gym floor might alter the schedule.
