Arrest made in fatal U.S. 280 hit-and-run

BIRMINGHAM—The Birmingham Police Department has arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run accident on U.S. 280 that left one woman dead on Aug. 5.

The Birmingham Police Department received a call regarding an accident on U.S. 280 and Key Drive at 5:39 a.m. on Aug. 5. Upon reporting to the scene, Birmingham Police officers and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies found a female victim.

The victim died from injuries sustained in the hit-and-run.

Witnesses provided police with a description of the newer model white pickup truck that fled the scene of the accident. Police noted the suspect vehicle would have sustained noticeable damage to its front end.

According to a news release from the Birmingham Police Department, an arrest was made following numerous tips from the public.

“The Birmingham Police Department received numerous tips from the public regarding this fatal accident and would like to thank everyone for their assistance,” the release read. “As a result of the tips received and the tireless work by our Traffic Homicide Unit and Homicide Unit an arrest was made (Aug. 6).”

The suspect is currently in the Birmingham City Jail on a 48-hour hold while investigators present the case to the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office for a warrant.

The suspect’s name is being withheld until a warrant is obtained.
