Birmingham police investigating fatal hit-and-run on U.S. 280

BIRMINGHAM—Police are searching for a suspect involved in a hit-and-run accident that left one pedestrian dead on U.S. 280 in the morning hours of Aug. 5.
The Birmingham Police Department received a call regarding an accident on U.S. 280 and Key Drive at 5:39 a.m. Birmingham Police officers and Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene.
“Us and Shelby County deputies arrived on the scene and we found the victim,” Birmingham Police Department Lt. Scott Thurmond said.
The female victim has been confirmed dead from injuries sustained in the hit-and-run collision, however she has not been identified at this time.
According to Thurmond, the victim was struck by a vehicle as she was crossing U.S. 280 eastbound near Key Drive. Witnesses described the vehicle involved as a newer model white pickup truck of unknown make.
Police believe the vehicle involved sustained damage to its front right side.
“It would definitely be noticeable,” Thurmond said of the damage.
The accident closed U.S. 280 eastbound down to one lane for more than an hour, according to a news release from the SCSO. As of 8:14 a.m., all lanes have been reopened to traffic.
