In other business, the council:
•Approved a resolution regarding the dedication of several subdivisions in Ballantrae.
•Approved a resolution regarding a donation of $3,000 to the Pelham High School Thespians to assist with their efforts to compete in the International Thespian Festival.
•Approved three ordinances to transfer or sell property previously owned by the Industrial Development Board to Pelham Industrial Enterprises, LLC.
•Approved the Pelham Police Department’s request for $1,000 from the 911 account to purchase small equipment related to dispatch headsets and communication devices.
•Heard a letter of appreciation from Mayor Gary Waters in which he thanked the City Council and Danny Tate, administrator of the Pelham Civic Complex and Ice Arena, and his staff for their efforts in hosting the Southeastern Collegiate Hockey Conference Championships and the American Collegiate Hockey Association, Division III National Championships.
“This is the second time the City of Pelham has hosted the SEC Hockey Championships. However, the hosting of the Division III Championships represents the first time – in history – these games have been hosted in the state of Alabama,” Waters’ letter read. “I would like to go on record and thank the Pelham City Council for supporting the necessary infrastructure improvements to the PCC that resulted in this caliber of tournament play.
“Danny Tate and the staff of the PCC are to be commended for meeting the needs of the Hockey Community, enhancing the economic impact of our community, with efficiency and true Southern hospitality. This corporate effort has, in an excellent fashion, put the City of Pelham on the National Hockey Map.”
•Heard from Pelham Police Chief Larry Palmer regarding crime prevention.
“This past weekend, we had a criminal enterprise come into the city of Pelham,” Palmer said, noting that suspects broke into several vehicles and stole personal property. “A big part of our job is to educate you. I would like nothing more than to help prevent you being a victim.”
Palmer said the suspects were caught and stolen items, which included handguns, were returned to the victims.
Palmer urged residents to remove valuables and other items from their cars, lock car doors and close garage doors.
“Help us to keep you from being a victim,” Palmer said. “Don’t leave things in plain sight. There’s nothing that’s off limits to these guys.”
