Will Streets shifted his weight to maintain balance as he came to a complete stop perched atop his dark blue unicycle. His brow furrowed as he focused on jumping from the concrete pavement onto the seat of a picnic bench and then onto the top of the bench.

Five of his friends were sitting at the table at Buck Creek Park, but casually maintained their conversation as Streets pedaled to the edge of the table and jumped his unicycle onto the grass.

“Will does a lot of technical riding and tricks,” Streets’ friend, Wendell Rotenberry, said.

“It helps me when I am riding on the trails,” Streets responded as he dismounted his unicycle.

The six guys gathered at the park on the humid June afternoon – ranging in age from 11-49 – represented the majority, if not all, of Shelby County’s contingent of avid off-road unicyclists.

Their interest was sparked a few years ago when fellow Shelby County resident Geoff Wymer decided to take his unicycle out of storage. Wymer had no clue he would ignite local interest in a sport many people don’t even know exists.
