County boys basketball update: area tournament edition

Several county boys basketball teams competed in their respective AHSAA area basketball tournaments, held from Feb. 4-10. They are as follows:

WESTMINSTER-OAK MOUNTAIN

The Knights opened up the Class 1A, Area 7 tournament with a win over the Winterboro Bulldogs. From there, the squad took on Talladega County Central in the championship round, but came up short, 51-36. Despite the loss, Westminster will travel to Montgomery to take on St. Jude on Feb. 14.

VINCENT

The Yellow Jackets marched their way to the Class 2A, Area 13 championship with strong defense and opportunistic offense. In the opening round, Vincent squared off with the Fultondale Wildcats. The Jackets won convincingly, 52-40, to clinch a berth in the finals against Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic. A back and forth affair ensued, with the Jackets taking a come from behind win, 55-52. With the win, the Jackets captured their seventh-straight area title, and will host Lamar County Feb. 14.

MONTEVALLO

The Bulldogs did not fare as well as they would have hoped, falling in the Class 3A, Area 8 tournament opener to Leeds, 44-37.

CALERA

The Calera Eagles got off to a strong start in the Class 4A, Area 7 tournament, taking down Jemison 56-44. In the tournament finals, however, the Eagles were overmatched by the Bibb County, as they fell to the Choctaws, 72-31. Calera now moves on to face Dora Feb. 14.

BRIARWOOD

The Lions came up short in the opening round of the Class 5A, Area 9 tournament, falling to Homewood, 48-38.

SHELBY COUNTY

The Wildcats kicked of the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament in style, rolling to a 69-53 win over Chilton County. From there, Shelby County faced Talladega in the area finals, but fell 71-56. The Wildcats will now travel to Valley for a sub-regional matchup Feb. 14.

OAK MOUNTAIN

The Eagles fell in heartbreaking fashion to rival Spain Park, 36-33, in the opening round of the Class 6A, Area 8 tournament.

CHELSEA

The Hornets fell to Pelham, 74-66 in the opening round of the Area 8 tournament.

PELHAM

The Panthers disposed of the Chelsea Hornets in the opening round of Class 6A, Area 8 tournament, 74-66. From there, the Panthers drew the Spain Park Jaguars at home. Despite having home court advantage, the Panthers fell to the Jags, 57-45 in the tournament finals. Pelham now travels to Wetumpka to take on the Indians in a sub-regional matchup Feb. 14.   

SPAIN PARK

The Jaguars captured the Class 6A, Area 8 title in breathtaking fashion. In the opening round, Spain Park took a 36-33 win over rival Oak Mountain. In the championship, the Jags used a come from behind 57-45 win over Pelham to take the championship. With the win, Spain Park win move on to host Thompson in a sub-regional matchup Feb. 14.

THOMPSON

The Warriors opened the Class 6A, Area 7 tournament win a dominating performance, taking down the Prattville Lions 63-54. The Warriors followed up the performance with tough loss at the hands of the Wetumpka Indians, 67-42. The Warriors move on to face Spain Park in a sub-regional contest. Feb. 14.
