Shelby County residents who have not yet signed up for trash pickup and are still interested in doing so are asked to call Waste Pro or Shelby County Environment Services as soon as possible to get signed up.

Waste Pro, who took over garbage collection services in many areas of Shelby County beginning Oct. 1, has been delivering new carts for several weeks now as residents have signed up for sevices, said Chad Scroggins, evironment services manager with Shelby County. Carts are now being delivered to rural areas of the county, but residents will only receive carts once they have signed up for services.

Affected areas include unincorporated Shelby County as well as participating municipalities such as Montevallo, Wilsonville and Wilton.

“This is the first time in over 20 years that we’ve had a different contractor, so it’ll be a change,” Scroggins said. “We need them to call (the Shelby County Environmental Services office) if they don’t have service. We have staff that’s certainly answering the phone and trying to get information out as much as possible. There’s no mandatory garbage collection in Shelby County, so it’s a subscription service.”

Scroggins also said residents can sign up online at Wasteprousa.com/shelby-county or by calling Waste Pro.

Even though residents were asked to sign up for services by Oct. 1, garbage is still be collected with or without carts. Scroggins said any trash placed at the side of the road, in any type of can or even without a can, will be picked up on the appropriate trash day.

Most trash days have stayed the same since Waste Pro has taken over, but residents are encouraged to call Environment Services to verify their trash days, Scroggins said.

To sign up, go to Wasteprousa.com/Shelby-county or call Waste Pro at 432-0878. For questions, general information or trash pickup schedules, contact Shelby County Environment Services at 669-3737.
