Thompson High School leads 29 county wrestlers to state championships

The Thompson Warriors wrestling team will lead a group of 29 wrestlers to Huntville’s Von Braun Center for the Alabama High School Athletic Association state tournament beginning Feb. 14.
Thompson led all county teams with 11 wrestlers that qualified for the state tournament. Riley Pike, Jaden Hunter, Brewer Gilliland, Cahaman Holder and Nick Hall each won their weight classes at the the Class 6A, Section 2 meet last weekend.
Oak Mountain had five competitors qualify for the championship meet led by Billy Dasher and Lloyd Time. Dasher and Time each finished second at the sectional meet last weekend. Jared Godrey, Dalton Bradford and Christopher Richmond each finished third at the section meet to advance to state.
Kevin McClure led four Spain Park wrestlers that qualified for state. McClure won the 182-pound weight class at the 6A, Section 2 meet while Leon Strong placed second in the 145 class. Blake Daniel and Marcus Jackson qualified for state with third and fourth place finishes respectively.
The Pelham wrestling team had three wrestlers advance to the state championship meet. Chase Mote took third at the sectional meet while Wade Thomas and Furman Taylor each placed fourth.
Chelsea’s Michael Waller will be the only Hornet to qualify for the state championship after a fourth place finish at the sectional meet.
All Class 6A wrestlers will begin competition on Feb. 14 with preliminary matches starting at 1 p.m.
Chase Weeks is the only Shelby County wrestler to advance to state meet. Weeks finished third at the sectional meet.
Calera had four wrestlers earn their way to the state. Coby Mize won the 170 weight class at the Class 1-4A, Section 2 meet. Jarrett Seiger and Kevin Murry each placed third while Danny Diaz took fourth to advance to Huntsville.
Classes 5A through 1A will begin competition on Feb. 15 at 9:30 a.m. Championship finals will begin Feb 16 at 11:30 a.m.
