A 44-year-old Shelby woman is being held in the Morgan County Jail on a $100,000 bond after she was arrested by U.S. Marshals on Feb. 1 and charged with one count of first-degree theft.
Marshals arrested Amy Machelle Smith, whose residence was listed on Shelby County 311 in Shelby, after the Decatur Police Department said she embezzled more than $50,000 from Elder Care of North Alabama in Decatur.
According to a Decatur Police Department press release, Elder Care of North Alabama President Clay New reported the alleged embezzlement to the police department in late November 2012.
“During the course of the investigation, Amy Machelle Smith, a former employee of Elder Care, was developed as a suspect in the theft,” read the press release.
After a warrant was issued for Smith, U.S. Marshals arrested her in Shelby County and transported her to Decatur. She was processed through the Decatur City Jail before she was transferred to the Morgan County Jail.
