Dwight David McCoy, 59, of Alabaster, formerly of Matewan, W.Va., and Kenova, W.Va., died Nov. 23 in Yambio, South Sudan. He was born Sept. 4, 1953, the son of Chester Lee McCoy of Alabaster and Yvonne Little McCoy of Kenova, W.Va. Dwight was a 1973 graduate of Pikeville College with an associate degree in mining technology.

He was the owner of S&J Mining in Williamson, W.Va. For a number of years, Dwight served as the superintendent at Peabody Coal Company in west Kentucky, as mine foreman at V&M Coal Company in McCarr, Ky., and was part owner and founder of Mingo Cable Service in Delbarton, W.Va. He later worked as President of Alabama Land and Mineral in Abernant. Dwight also worked with EMR as Project Manager in Hurricane Katrina cleanup work, he was a safety lead during the BP oil spill cleanup in Slidell, La., and Program Director during tornado cleanup efforts throughout Alabama and in Joplin, Mo. He most recently worked as the Country Director for SGI Global Holdings in Yambio, South Sudan.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Jeffrey Scott McCoy. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Shelley Clark McCoy; children, Dwight David McCoy II, Courtney McCoy Ward (Joshua), Miranda McCoy Carroll (Nicholas) and Kirby McCoy Henderson (David).

Survivors also include his stepmother, Diana McCoy of Alabaster; brother, Tim McCoy (Sherry) of Pawleys Island, S.C.; sister, Trish Murphy (Wayne) of Delbarton, W.Va.; sister-in-law, Dr. Susan McCoy; grandchildren, Christian, Aubrey and Lucy Ward and Wyatt and Walker Carroll; and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Nov. 30 at the Reger Funeral Home in Huntington, W.Va. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Dec. 1 at the Reger Funeral Chapel in Huntington, W.Va.
