First-year Oak Mountain High School football coach Cris Bell saw plenty of bright spots in the Eagles’ preseason jamboree Aug. 24 on the road at Oxford.
Oak Mountain was tied with Oxford 7-7 when the Eagles’ starters exited the playing field. Oxford edged the Eagles 13-10 with a field goal late in the scrimmage.
“It went fairly well,” Bell said. “We played well in spots. I’m sure (Oxford coach) John Grass would say the same about his team.”
Sophomore running back Josh Gaines scored the lone touchdown for the Eagles with his 10-yard touchdown run on an off-tackle rushing play. Senior kicker Michael Cole added the extra point following the touchdown.
Cole also added a field goal in the jamboree.
Bell said the Eagles need to work on special teams before their season opener Aug. 31 against Shades Valley.
“With our coverage team, punts and kickoffs, we’ve got to get much better,” Bell said.
