Lions finish runner-up in section tournament

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ golf team finished runner-up in an Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A section tournament April 30 at Sylacauga Country Club.
The Lions finished in a two-way tie for first following the section tournament before dropping a one-hole playoff against Chilton County.
Briarwood Christian, which qualified for a Class 5A sub-state tournament May 7 at Arrowhead Country Club in Montgomery, carded a team score of 303 strokes in the tournament.
John Hayden led the Lions after shooting an even par 72. Banks Nash fired a 2-over par 74, while Trevor Page shot a 3-over par 75.
Brent Gilbert finished with a score of 82. Brendan Mallory fired a 94.
Chelsea also qualified for the Class 5A sub-state tournament in Montgomery following the section tournament.
The Hornets carded a team score of 332 strokes. Tyler Shope led the Hornets after shooting a 1-under par 71, which placed him second overall in individual standings in the section tournament.
Reed Kelley carded a 81, while Josh Parker finished with a score of 89 strokes. Jesse Goss shot a 91 and teammate Zac Tolleson finished one stroke behind him with a 92.
