Lions finish seventh in state tournament

The Briarwood Christian School boys’ tennis team finished seventh in team standings at the Alabama High School Athletic Association Class 5A state tournament April 27.
The Lions racked up 21 points in the state tournament.
Russell Hancock reached the No. 2 singles’ bracket championship match. Hancock won his quarterfinal match against Baylor Adams of Cullman 6-0, 6-2 and his semifinal match against Turner Sankey of St. Paul’s 6-4, 6-3 before falling to Brock Tiffin of Muscle Shoals 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the championship match.
Lukas Castellanos reached the No 5 singles’ bracket championship match. Castellanos won his opening match against Dylan Mansell of Russellville 6-3, 6-2. Castellanos defeated Jon Riley Davis of Walker 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals and topped Spencer Miller of Spanish Fort 6-2, 6-4 before falling to Lawson Bedford of Muscle Shoals 6-4, 6-2 in the championship match.
Griffin Russell of Briarwood Christian fell to David Martin Mayhall of St. Paul’s 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 1 singles’ bracket quarterfinals. Philip Taylor of Briarwood Christian fell to Devantez Jackson of Charles Henderson 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 3 singles’ bracket quarterfinals.
Daniel Kuyk of Briarwood Christian fell to Bailey Castle of St. Paul’s 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles’ bracket quarterfinals. Connor Brewton of Briarwood Christian fell to Patrick Steadman of St. Paul’s 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 6 singles’ bracket quarterfinals.
Russell and Hancock defeated Colby Hopper and Joseph Harris of Walker 6-7, 6-0, 7-6 in the opening round of the No. 1 doubles’ bracket before falling to Ismael Quinones and Alex Quinones of Demopolis 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.
Taylor and Kuyk defeated Jacob Davis and Jack Baker of Cullman 6-2, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the No. 2 doubles’ bracket before falling to Sankey and Castle of St. Paul’s 6-3, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Castellanos and Brewton fell to Dylan Mansell and Blake Hovater of Russellville 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 doubles’ bracket quarterfinals.
