Falcons edge Tigers in non-conference game

Down 9-6 heading into the ninth inning, the Falcons plated four runs to take a 10-9 lead.
Freshman Cody White led off the inning with a walk. He advanced to second on a passed ball. Freshman Zack Willoughby then drew a walk to make it first and second with no outs. After a pair of fly outs, Ross drew a walk to make it bases loaded with two outs. The next batter was Peterson, who hit a grand slam to left field to give the Falcons a 10-9 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
Montevallo was unable to hold the lead in the bottom of the ninth inning. The Tigers’ first batter flew out to left field. The next batter tripled to left field and was thrown out at home trying to make it an inside-the-park homerun. With two outs, the next batter hit a double down the left-field line. After an intentional walk, the Montevallo pitcher hit the next batter to load the bases with two outs.
The next batter drew a walk, which tied the game, but Montevallo was able to strikeout the final batter to move the game into extra innings.
In the 10th inning, sophomore Ryan York led off the inning with a walk. After a strikeout, Willoughby was hit by a pitch to move York to second with just one out. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, which set up Fulmer for the game-winning hit. Fulmer laced a single to right field to score York and give the Falcons a one-run advantage. After a walk to load the bases, the Tigers were able to get out of the jam with a line out and a ground out, which ended the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th inning, Brandsema struck out the first batter. The next batter reached on an error. The third batter flied out to right field and Brandsema then closed the game with another strikeout to give the Falcons their 14th win of the season.
The Falcons will return to action Friday, March 16 at 6 p.m. as they host Armstrong Atlantic in a single game.
