The University of Montevallo baseball team split a doubleheader March 5 on the road at Peach Belt Conference foe UNC-Pembroke.

The Braves won the first game 5-2 while the Falcons took the nightcap 14-5. The win ended the Braves’ 19-game home winning streak.

Montevallo (9-9 overall, 5-3 in Peach Belt Conference) was led by senior Heath Peterson, who was 4-for-8 from the plate with three RBIs, a double, a homerun, a pair of walks and two runs scored.
Senior Chris Ross led the team in RBIs with five as he was 2-for-8 with a pair of runs scored and a walk.

Sophomore Will Fulmere was 3-for-9 with a double, four runs scored and a pair of walks.

As a team the Falcons picked up 21 walks including 18 in the second game.

On the mound, sophomore Alex Guilford picked up the win in game two as he went 6.1 innings with three strikeouts and a walk. He allowed five runs including four earned. His record improved to 2-2 on the season.

Junior Michael Shreves took home the loss in the first game as he went 7.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts and two walks. He allowed five runs and his record fell to 1-2 on the season.

The Falcons held the early lead in the first game as they scored a pair of runs in the second as Ross scored on an error by the pitcher and sophomore Alec Stivert drove in Peterson on a groundout to the shortstop. The Braves answered with five runs in the fifth off of five hits and that would be all the scoring they would need as they won, 5-2.

In game two it was all about the walks. The Braves pitchers combined for 18 walks and also plunked four batters which meant 22 free bases for the Falcons. UNC-Pembroke opened the scoring in the second with a pair of runs off a pair of hits.

UM got on the board in the third as Ross hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Fulmer who had reached on a double down the left field line. UNC-Pembroke increased its lead to two as they added a run in the bottom half of the inning to go up 3-1.

The Falcons tacked on a run in the fourth as Peterson hit a lead-off homerun. The Braves answered again with a run of their own to go up 4-2.

Montevallo broke open the game in the fifth as they scored five runs. Junior Austin Dubberly, a Pelham High School graduate, drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run. Ross then hit a two RBI single down the left field line. Senior Blaine Rosenburg, an Oak Mountain graduate, drew a bases loaded walk to score the fourth run of the inning and junior Andrew Hill, a Pelham High School graduate, hit an RBI single through the left side to score the final run of the inning which put the Falcons ahead 7-5.

Montevallo tacked on four more in the seventh to take a commanding lead.

Junior Vincent Andrews drew a bases loaded walk to score the first run of the inning. Dubberly walked during the next at bat to score the second run. Peterson then hit a two-RBI single to center field to end the scoring in the seventh.

UNC-Pembroke added a run in the bottom half to cut the lead to 11-5 but three runs in the eighth by the Falcons put the game out of reach.

The Falcons will return to action March 5 at 11 a.m. as they close out their three-game series with UNC-Pembroke.
