FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Montevallo women’s basketball team led by two points at halftime, but an early second-half run by host University of North Carolina at Pembroke gave the Braves a 58-49 victory in a Peach Belt Conference contest Jan. 7.

Montevallo (5-7 overall, 0-3 in Peach Belt Conference) was led by junior Teanna Boxley, who scored a game-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers.

Senior Davia Harris had a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Junior Zena Nasiloski was second on the team in rebounding with nine boards. She also chipped in three assists.

Montevallo lost the points in the paint battle 26-18 and allowed the Braves to score 22 points off turnovers, compared to just nine for the Falcons.

Montevallo trailed for the opening 10 minutes of play, but with 10:27 left in the game and the Falcons down 16-10, Harris hit back-to-back-to-back baskets to spark a 13-2 run.

The Falcons took a 23-18 lead with 4:28 left in the period. The Braves hit a free throw and a jumper down the stretch to cut Montevallo’s lead to just two at the halftime break.

The Braves opened up the second half with a 14-2 run to take a 10-point lead with 14:32 left to play in regulation. Montevallo was able to cut the lead to just three points with 5:56 left to play as Boxley hit one of her four 3-pointers, but that would be as close as they would get.

The Braves were led by Domonique Washington, who had 18 points, while Amelia Partin chipped in 14 and Courtney Bolton added 12.

The Falcons will return to action Monday, Jan. 9 at 4:30 p.m. as they travel to Francis Marion University for another Peach Belt Conference contest.
