CALERA — The Montevallo High School girls’ basketball team edged Vincent 42-36 in the opening round of the Shelby County tournament Dec. 16 at Calera High School.

Kayla Cunningham led the Bulldogs (7-4) with 19 points in the victory. Cunningham also grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Miya Farrington added nine points. Myshael Thompson chipped in seven points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.

Kiah Smith finished with four points and a team-high five assists. Natalie Holsombeck added two points. Alex Bolton contributed one point.

Brooklyn Jones led the Yellow Jackets (3-7) with 16 points in the loss.

Joy Tucker added seven points. Tacarra Hawkins and Pam Mann chipped in four points each.

Taj Youngblood and Drienna Wallace finished with two points each. Arkel Kelley contributed one point.

Montevallo advanced to face Oak Mountain in the tournament quarterfinals Dec. 17.
