Falcons split a pair of weekend matches

The University of Montevallo volleyball team swept Lander University on the road Sept. 30.
The Falcons (6-10 overall, 2-3 in Peach Belt Conference) were led by sophomore Manyi Ati, who had 13 kills, three aces, six digs and a pair of blocks. The Falcons won 25-22, 25-19 and 26-24.
Junior Jordan Spinks added nine kills and five digs while freshman Michelle Walker and sophomore Michelle Carle each had seven kills. Freshman Brianna Guzinski led the team in hitting percentage with a .417 and had six kills and five digs.
Senior setter Anna Garrison had 33 assists and 12 digs while senior libero Rachel Wotitzky led the team with 17 digs.
The Falcons had eight service aces and six total blocks. UM hit .212 for the match while holding Lander to .146.
Mallory Wasik led the Bearcats with 13 kills while Jessica Register had 29 assists and 12 digs.
The Falcons fell to USC Aiken 3-1 in a match that had to go into extra points in three of the four sets Oct. 1.
The Falcons fell 29-31, 25-21, 31-29 and 26-24. UM was led by Ati, who had 12 kills, six digs and three blocks.
Junior Lucy Perez and Walker each added nine kills.
Garrison had 38 assists and 14 digs while Wotitzky led the team with 19 digs.
The Pacers had 16 total blocks compared to the Falcons six which proved to be a big difference in the match.
Each set went down to the final points with the Falcons coming out on top in set one and the Pacers winning the final three sets in dramatic fashion.
UM hit .114 as a team while USCA had a .150 attack percentage.
The Pacers were led by Emily Maassen who had 14 kills and eight blocks while Jessica Loper added 12 kills and seven blocks.
UM will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m. as the Falcons host the University of West Alabama. The match is also Faculty and Staff Appreciation Night for the UM volleyball team.
