BUHL — Garrius Chappell led the Montevallo High School Bulldogs to their first victory of the season Sept. 16 at Sipsey Valley.
Chappell scored all five of Montevallo’s touchdowns, leading the team to a 35-7 victory, and led the team in rushing with 18 carries for 181 yards.
“He just kind of carried the load for us tonight,” said Bulldogs head coach Jamie Williams. “I call him “the beast.” When he’s running hard, he’s very tough to bring down.”
Chappell scored on a 4-yard touchdown with 5:31 remaining in the second quarter, extending the Bulldogs’ lead by 14 after a 1-yard touchdown with 32 seconds left in the first half.
With 11:48 remaining in the third, Chappell returned a kickoff 73 yards for a touchdown. He added two more scores on a 70-yard touchdown run and another 1-yard score, both in the third quarter.
Sipsey Valley’s lone touchdown came during the fourth quarter.
Montevallo’s R.J. Scaife racked up 150 yards rushing on 15 attempts.
“It was a turning point for us,” Williams said. “For the first time in a long time, when we got up, they seemed like they really enjoyed the game. They really made some improvements in areas we needed to.”
Williams said that, after losing to three tough teams, he is proud of his team for fighting and hopes they will continue that drive throughout the season.
“I think a night like tonight they understand why we push them so hard,” Williams said. “I hope the kids can recognize that when times are tough, that’s when you find our what you’re made of.”
