Dear Editor,

When purchasing merchandise on the Internet, I am charged the Birmingham sales tax rate of 9 percent since my zip code is 35242.

I actually live in unincorporated Shelby County, where the sales tax rate is 5 percent.

Number one, we need a four-digit zip code extension for unincorporated Shelby County in order to receive the proper tax rate; and secondly, we need to somehow ensure that Shelby County, and not Birmingham or Jefferson County, is receiving the taxes incurred on such purchases.
