COLUMBIANA – An apartment complex for seniors was briefly discussed Tuesday night during a meeting of the Columbiana City Council.

Hilry King, Columbiana’s city planner and public works director, said The Shoals apartments appear to be progressing well.

King said it appears the apartments would be completed in September. He said work crews are now doing landscaping work there.

“It’s looking really, really good,” King said.

The Shoals, located on Alabama 25, is owned and operated by Gateway Management. President Randy Fleece previously said the complex has 46 units, including one-bedroom and two-bedroom units.

To live there, seniors must be at least 55 years of age and meet income limits, which are $25,920 for one person, and $29,640 for two people, Fleece previously said.

The Shoals is a $6.7 million investment, Fleece said, including a $644,830 tax credit for 2010, as well as HOME funds of $1.6 million.

The units will be rented for $375 to $400. Construction started in late 2010.

In other business from the brief meeting, the council:

– approved minutes from the July 19 pre-council and regular meeting and the July 27 special called meeting.

– granted approval for City Clerk Gina Antolini to use the city credit card, not to exceed $500, for meals and accommodations Aug. 10-12 while attending the MMC Institute in Tuscaloosa.
