The Shelby County Retired Senior Volunteer Program is working to bring the “Yellow Dot” program to the county.

The program is designed to assist Alabama citizens and first responders in the event of a car crash or other medical emergency involving a participant’s vehicle.

The idea is to help save lives during the critical “golden hour” by improving communication at a time when accident victims may not be able to communicate themselves.

Though geared toward seniors and residents with medical conditions, the free program is open to all county residents.

An enrollment event and news conference is scheduled for May 3 at 10 a.m. in the Community Room at the Shelby County Services Building, located at 1126 County Service Drive in Pelham.

The four items needed for the program are a photo, a completed personal information form, a Yellow Dot decal and Yellow Dot folder.

The personal information form lists a participant’s basic information, medical history, allergies, medications and dosage, names of doctors and other pertinent medical information.

The Yellow Dot decal is placed in the lower left corner of the driver’s side rear window of a participant’s vehicle. In the event of an emergency, emergency responders will see the decal and know to look in the vehicle’s glove compartment for the Yellow Dot folder.

Twenty Alabama counties, including Jefferson County, currently participate in the program.
