Montevallo caps Peach Belt series with loss to Georgia College

The University of Montevallo baseball team suffered its fourth Peach Belt Conference series sweep of the season following a 9-5 loss at Georgia College and State University.

The loss officially knocked the Falcons (18-23 overall, 6-15 in Peach Belt Conference) out of the Peach Belt Conference tournament race.

Montevallo was led by freshman Will Fulmer, who went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI, a walk and a run scored. Junior Heath Peterson and senior Josh Dabbs led the team in RBIs with two each.

Peterson was 2-for-5 at the plate with a double, a run scored and two RBIs. Dabbs was 1-for-5 with two RBIs. Freshman Pablo Martell was the only other Montevallo player with more than one hit as he was 2-for-5 at the plate.

Freshman Alex Guilford took the mound for the Falcons as he went four innings with a strikeout, a walk and six runs given up. Four of the six runs were earned as Guilford (4-3) took home the loss.

Four Falcons split the final four innings with each pitching one inning. Junior Wes Rich, a Pelham graduate, and freshman Edward Brandsema did not allow a hit in their innings, while sophomore Devon Davis allowed just one hit in his inning.

Georgia College got the scoring going early, as the Bobcats scored six runs over the first four innings.

Montevallo finally got on the board in the fifth inning, as Peterson hit an RBI double followed by a two-run single from Dabbs to cut the lead to three runs.

The Bobcats answered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning and another run in the sixth inning to up their lead back to six runs.

The Falcons’ final runs came in the eighth inning, as Fulmer and Peterson each hit RBI singles in the inning.
