Falcons end three game skid with win over West Georgia

The University of Montevallo baseball team used a five-run first inning to down the University of West Georgia 8-4 and snap a three-game losing streak April 13.
The Falcons (18-20) were led by senior Scott Deason, a Spain Park graduate, who was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a double, a walk and a run scored. Freshman Will Fulmer also had three hits as he was 3-for-5 at the plate with two runs scored.
Freshman Justin Burgess led the team with two RBIs while four others had one each.
Sophomore Devon Davis started the game for the Falcons as he went three innings with a pair of walks and gave up three runs.
Junior Brett Roney pitched the next three innings with four strikeouts and a walk. Roney scattered three hits and took home the win, improving his record to 2-0 on the year. Junior Wes Rich, freshman Edward Brandsema and Deason all pitched one inning of relief. Rich, a Pelham graduate, was the only reliever to give up a run as he allowed one run while giving up a pair of hits.
Montevallo got going early as the Falcons scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Junior Chris Ross, a Pelham graduate, led off the inning with a walk. Sophomore Austin Dubberly, a Pelham graduate, and Fulmer followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases. Junior Heath Peterson picked up the Falcons’ first RBI with a bases-loaded walk, which scored Ross.
Dubberly and Fulmer then scored on a pair of wild pitches to put the Falcons ahead 3-0. Junior Blaine Rosenberg, an Oak Mountain graduate, drew a walk to put runners at first and third with no outs. After a strikeout, Davis helped out his own cause with a sacrifice fly RBI, which scored Peterson. Deason and Burgess followed with back-to-back singles, which scored Rosenberg and gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead.
West Georgia answered with a single run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning to cut the Falcons’ lead to just 5-3. Montevallo responded with another run in the bottom of the third inning as Burgess hit a sacrifice fly RBI to score Deason, who reached on a double.
After two scoreless innings, the Falcons tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning.
Rosenberg hit an RBI single through the left side to score Dubberly, who reached on a single through the left side. Headley followed with an RBI single to right-center field, which scored Fulmer, who reached earlier in the inning on a single.
The Wolves’ final run came in the seventh inning, but the Falcons held on for the victory.
